LITTLE did Barry Whittam realise when he had the idea to create a `recyclable ashtray’ that it would pave the way for his visit to 10 Downing Street.

But since 59-year-old Barry’s company, Butz, went into production 18 months ago, his ashtrays have propelled its sales to £250,000.

It now has a burgeoning order book and already counts Manchester Airport, Apollo Cinemas, Moto, Welcome Break, Mobil Offshore, and Oldham and Midlothian borough councils among its clients.

And that’s before the various independent businesses such as pubs, clubs and restaurants are counted.

Barry, the company’s chairman, established it with £250,000 of his own money.

It employs four full-time staff at its headquarters in Wythenshawe and manufactures all its products in Britain.

He explains: “The idea for the product came to me when I was having a Sunday afternoon drink with some friends.

“The cigarette bins installed by the pub were dirty, tired and required a key to empty them - they were disgusting for the staff to attend to.

“I realised then that the ideal solution was to incorporate a fire retardant, disposable container - and from here Butz was born.

The ashtrays can be easily removed from the dispenser and replaced on a daily basis with a fresh one.

“I have been delighted with the success of the company over the past 18 months, and we continue to receive inquiries from around the world.

“Our products are also being looked at by major hotel chains - including the Hilton Group - as well as airports in the Gulf.

“Next week, I’m heading off to Kosovo for discussions with a major airport.”

Earlier this week, Barry was among a delegation of 150 British entrepreneurs invited to visit the Prime Minister and Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Skills, at 10 Downing Street.

Barry, who worked as a designer for many years before launching his own company, said: “I never imagined that my company would one day come to the attention of the PM.

“I’ve done a lot of work with the Department of Trade and Industry and believe that they were the people who recommended me.

“Gordon Brown thanked everyone assembled for starting a business - for taking the risk to do so - and showing the ambition and the aspiration to do something for the people we employ.

“Lord Mandelson went on to say that Britain’s entrepreneurs have the skills, resources and knowledge base to lead us out of the downturn and that the government’s job is to do everything it can to support growing businesses and to remove barriers to success.

“They were both genuinely interested in what we do and how business is progressing.

“One of the issues I pointed out to Lord Mandelson was that it makes sense for me to export my goods whenever possible - mainly because you tend to get paid immediately.

“When you sell to companies in this country, it is often the case that you don’t receive your money for some time afterwards.

“I want to continue driving my company forward and intend to keep building on the success that we’ve achieved during one of the most difficult economic periods.”

The trial of the Butz bins outside Terminal 3 has been a resounding success, significantly improving the general appearance of the terminal frontage and proving to be popular with both customers and staff alike.

As a result of the 2007 smoke-free legislation, those wishing to smoke have to do so outside the terminal buildings. As a result, smokers congregated at the terminal doors, causing access problems and potential security risks.

N o n - s m o k i n g customers also had to pass-through an unpleasant, smoky environment with cigarette butts littering the floors outside the terminals.

As part of the airport’s year long review of the situation, eight Butz bins were installed around Terminal 3 on a six-month trial in order to address these problems. A Butz bin is a cigarette bin affixed to a wall, which provides a clean and safe place to dispose of used butts. Uniquely, Butz uses a disposable tray meaning there is no need to empty the contents of the bins – instead, cleaning staff simply remove
the used container for disposal and replace it with a new one.

Jon Fahie, Head of Terminals Facilities, said: “The Butz bins have made the work of the cleaning staff much easier because less time now needs to be spent outside picking up cigarette ends off the floor – this means that staff have additional time to focus on other areas.”

Daniel King, Customer Relations Manager, explained: “After a successful trial period it is now our intention to roll more bins out over the coming months. This simple, yet effective, solution gives the airport more control over where smokers go to smoke whilst making things more pleasant for nonsmokers.”

With the improved appearance and cleanliness at Terminal 3, Butz bins will be installed across the airport site. Ten bins will be outside Terminal 1, ten outside Terminal 2, and six at the Ground Transport Interchange Station.
